My Grandpa, who raised my sister and I as if he were a father, passed away the day after Christmas. I am having a hard time dealing a bit more than I thought I would....but this song reminds me of him and is comforting. It is also comforting to get an idea behind why this song was written.

Re: the writing & filming of the song ASTRONAUT.

It's been a while since this was posted, but I had googled an explanation for "Astronaut" because I have been listening to it on repeat. When I first heard this song is was during the climax of it. It made me cry, but I was also relieved to know someone such as you has experienced the one-sidedness of falling in love with someone who is all over the place but you can never touch them or even catch up with them no matter how hard you try. He loved me and I'm pretty sure I could have as well, but we could never work out. He vanished after I moved on, it was all in good terms. I will never talk to him again. He was one of the rare types who could make anyone smile and one of the most interesting people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing...
Thank you for this song. You're really good at coming up with music that I feel I can relate to. Makes people not feel so alienated in the world.

Re: the writing & filming of the song ASTRONAUT.

There was someone impossible I let close to me once. I love the song too, but Have to Drive is my WKAP favorite and the one that most often gets stuck in my head. It was stuck there for almost all of the 80 mile bike ride I took yesterday ... Thanks so much for sharing your nerd-tomboy photos with us, and for your touching memories of the Challenger disaster. I watched it unfold live with my 6- and 3-year old daughter and son and aged 10 years in 5 minutes.

Re: the writing & filming of the song ASTRONAUT.

I love it when your songs speak of the true nature of experience. That Love isn't always some fairytale of hope or a pit of generic, trite sorrows. For me Astronaut is that sort of song that describes a love for someone whose core of attraction that draws you in is also what keeps you from drawing level with them. They are unattainable, the love is unrequited but yet you are unrelenting.Such a perfect tragedy. Damn I hope you do another Australia tour soon.

Re: the writing & filming of the song ASTRONAUT.

I loved this post so much Amanda! Awesome song and awesome video. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but I've always considered "Astronaut" the other side of the coin compared to the old Bowie song "Space Oddity". Same story, different point of views.

Re: the writing & filming of the song ASTRONAUT.

Thank you for this profound explanation.
