sending LOVE to you in russia.

    XOXOXOX
  • Greta · 3 months ago
East coast tour? D: How about the Midwest? One stop in Chicago or Madison? We miss you out here!
In any case, even if you weren't too sure of Russia so far, it seems lovely from your descriptions. The kids are adorable and holy cow! O.O That metal working is so intricate and... I can't find the right adjective, but I love it!
The concert photos are wicked, you all always have so much fun!
Ooooh, sleeping on a train, that *does* sound comfortable... may have to try that someday.
By the way, my sister is doing a tribute to you as I type this, playing for me on the ukulele. She's attempting to recreate the Egyptian folksong Ah Ya Zein for me to dance to. Good stuff :) We thought of you and hope that all is well.
Warmest wishes from Greta and Savvie (my lil sis the ukulele-attempter... yes I did just make that word up) and our hopes that the rest of your tour goes better than planned, that you keep practicing your ukulele, that you figure out the last of those lyrics that are giving you so much trouble, and that you keep making your fabulous music. Much love from Wisconsin, m'dear.

I second the idea of a Chicago gig! I have missed Miss Palmer exactly three times by a whisker, and I'll be damned if I miss her when she comes to my state again! :p
  • Greta · 3 months ago
Since I didn't start following her closely until recently, I haven't had a chance to miss her coming here... but I think soon would be a good time to schedule a gig nearby ;) Think of all of the fun we could have in Chicago (or Madison, though it's a bit out of the way) with ukulele ninja gigs and then a wicked show! I'm picturing the lakeshore covered in AFP fans and ukuleles, song floating across the parks... and lots of fabulously dressed people parading around having the best time *ever*

I third that! Get back to Chicago! I miss you!

SERIOUSLY. If you play Singapore, I will...well, first squeal a lot and bounce around...and then try and do all in my power to fly over there, my friend's Halloween birthday party be damned XD It's a short flight from here. The husband and I are already plotting an anniversary trip there. Ahhhhhh and here I feared that living in Japan would afford me no chances to see you play ever XD

Love the pictures. Looks like a fabulous show. I was in Petersburg for vacation in April (and lived there a bit in college). Such a strange and gorgeous city!

Yay, east coast tour!!! I haven't been able to see you solo at all, because I moved out to West Michigan for three years for school, and I was just in between Chicago and Detroit, both too far away to easily attend shows. Now I'm back in RI, so I hope I will get to see you in Providence or Noho, or failing that, Boston. :D

Can I be one of the cats living in the yoga studio? I bake bread from scratch, knit fingerless mitts, and sew Elizabethan corsets by hand...

Also, I second (third?) the vote for a show here in Madison. I was horribly upset that I had to work and missed all but the last song of Jason's show while he was here, so maybe you can bring him along too? I promise I won't blush and stammer like a school girl this time, either. :op

you should check out the film Russian Ark-spectacular and entirely shot in the Hermitage
  • Editorial · 3 months ago
I'll second that; 'one-hour dash through the hermitage' reminded me of Russian Ark too, as the film is basically a ninety-minute dash (in one unbroken take!) through the museum and its history.

dksjds I about had a heart attack when I saw "singapore". Never even dreamt we might get to see you perform here! If you do manage to book a gig, my sister and I will definitely be there; if not, we'll still be more than happy to have you and Neil here♥ :) Bring lots of sunscreen though, it's scorching here on the equator.

    Dear Amanda,
while reading this blog entry a question popped up:
Why was Germany always treating you so badly or better why do you seem to mostly not having felt very well here? I grew up in Baravia and have been living in Berlin for six years now - and certainly I know what your comment about smiling or NOT smiling there means...and it also took me a while to really get settled in Berlin.
BUT: I just was out on my bike on a lazy saturday afternoon, riding from the eastern part of Berlin to Kreuzberg and only thought (apart from happily thinking of nothing): Such a good city. Such a relaxed and at the same time extremely exciting city. Such a place to be. I would love to show you around a little in Berlin the alternative way and try to open up some spaces for you for "landing" here. I think and hope it might not take much more than a not at all spectacular spaziergang through kreuzberg and then ending up at one of the tiny bars and restaurants in Neukölln in the evening.
Anyways. I'm still crossing my fingers for the september show in Hamburg becoming reality. Let me know, if you will have some spare time then as well to give Berlin another chance, if you want!
    Love, Katja
(who is soooo surprised by herself, since she's writing to someone she's only seen a few times in concert halls as if she knew this person. Amanda, you have so absolutely amazing skills connecting with us that even I started to write "fan mail" which I never did before in my so far almost 30 years of life. Thank you for your music and for sharing so much of your life with us.)

Sometimes you just have to let those words swim around your head forever huh? I have a theatre in mind, (well that doesn't cookoo) and sometimes there's just a lot of damn talking.....
  • David · 3 months ago
I like the Hamburg idea, although it's still quite a bit from my neck of those german woods. And if you ever feel that way about Berlin again, i may have to set you up with some Berliners to really go see and feel some of the things that are nice about that city. Because there are quite a lot of those things. I'm not living there, but i know people who do (my sister, for one).
  • Jen · 3 months ago
Could you include east coast Canada too? Or at least come as close as you can to the border in Maine towards the end of December so I can drive down after exams?

Just had a quick look through the comments and I agree with Andrea. Come to Frederiction.

Amanda, next time you're in St.Petersburg, don't tag along with the promoters, for God's sake :) just tweet up that you're arriving and need/would like a local guide, and I'm sure people will pop up who can show you quite a bit more than just Nevsky prospect (if nobody does, I'll volunteer :) ) (if you do come to Moscow with Neil, grab him and do a day-or-two dash to here)
  • Morganne · 3 months ago
Strangely enough, I felt very much the same way in Russia. Like it was all one big blur and none of it really set in. Perhaps that is the way Russia is when you spend 2 days in it. (Not sure how long you are there for, but it's now long I was. 1 day Moscow, 1 day St. Petersburg) We were parked in front of the yellow submarine you took a picture of when the tour guide taught us how to say I love you in Russian "yellow blue bus".

Hope you enjoyed as much Russia as you could on the speed-plan.
  • I. Skorokhodov · 3 months ago
Was at your Moscow concert at the picnic. It was more than awesome, it was magnificent, charming, incredible, but it was only for an hour. Wait for your comeback with tens of dancers, musicians, clowns, etc and for the fucking biggest show, Moscow ever seen. And i second my compatriot, next time you visit Russia find more time and adequate guide. I guess both in Moscow and Peter you can find two or three (or ten or as many, as you wish) your english-speaking fans, who will guide you better, than a cicerone.
And the last one. We are not humourless. We simply has no habit to smile.

    Loving you,
    Ivan

I don't know if it's still around, but you should check and see if the Barley Barn is still around in Moscow.

They were micro-brewing before it was cool.

Florida technically counts as on the east coast, right?

... Right? (Please, please, please, say right!)

In other news, I wish I was in Russia with you. Life in the same place every day is making me progressively sadder and sadder.

Hope you're enjoying where you are though. :)

Yay re: East Coast tour! I've been moving a lot lately and my favorite musicians keep doing shows in places that I've just left. (Which is my veiled way of saying "come to New Haven please!" Since I'm moving there in a week!)

I traveled overnight by train from France to Italy this spring, but we booked second-class and definitely didn't have real mattresses and sheets. :P

    I definitely dig the cathedral-tractor.

Would you consider stopping by Israel at some point? The Tel Aviv cabaret scene could always use a serious boost, and of course the night life, beer-directed world always flourishes under semi-fascist regimes...
Mr Neil can testify that we don't bite (too hard)... :P

Had you any ideas coming back to Moscow /St. Petersburg or e.g. Kiev for a longer "dive" into the life here?
It is a familiar feeling to me since when I went to Moscow to see your concert last weekend
i then had only a couple of hours for seeing the city from the "inside". At night when i was sitting in the train back to Kiev i had this devastating feeling understanding that i've missed something big and important..
  • bjacques · 3 months ago
Damn, wish I'd kept up more closely. I was in Moscow and St. Pete in summer 2001, just when the currency was starting to stabilize and the biznissmen got all the carbombings out of their systems.

I'd have suggested (in Moscow) the former VDNKh, a sort of Communist World's Fair with the Cosmonaut Museum and the Ostankhino TV tower nearby, or else making the Master & Margarita pilgrimage to Patriarchs Ponds and Mikhail Bulgakov's house.

In St. Pete I got to see the Ethnological and Antropological Museum Named for Tsar Peter (or something like that), as well as accidentally getting into the Hermitage for free.

Yessss, the old Leningrade Express! We went the opposite direction, Moscow-St, Petersburg. The woman in charge of our train car gave us the stinkeye. She was kind of pretty and had her hair in a long, thick braid. I was in luv!

Any chance of a side trip to Amsterdam before or after Hamburg, preferably after 19 September?
  • Anna · 3 months ago
St. Pete is a whole lot more beautiful if you have time to sit in a coffee shop and just observe people walkign by, or if you can stroll along some of the canals or the roods that are parallel to Nevsky Prospekt. If all you get to do is rush around becasue of a tight tour schedule, you'll have missed the really cool little places like the CCCP Kafe and the other wonderfully sketchy mafia owned and run shops/cafes. Also, if you didn't get to sample Teremok, you misses some fine Russian fast food.

I worked for/in the Hermitage, if you spent only 1 minute infront of every piece of artwork, you'd spend 9 years in the Winter palace, add on all the other palaces and gallery's that are part of The State Hermitage Collection and you're looking at roughly 12 years to see everyhting for just one minute. If you ever get back to St. Pete, ask them to let you see the storage vaults under the Winter Palace. The cats are adorable and fierce and the volume of artwork in storage is staggering.

Glad you're coming to the east coast soon...I can't wait to see you in concert for the first time.

    ~Anna~
