you probably get a lot of tips, and you can never listen to them all, but if this one by any chance sticks to the back of your memory, go see Paul Currie (aka Sticky Bivouac) at the fringe, a show one will never forget. great comedian, absurdist, clown, puppeteer or what ever you want him to be.

This was the first blog I've read and fell in love! Maybe you should make a Dead Kennedies cover called Stealing People's Boxes! ;)
anyways, this was a real good read. I hope you come down to New Orleans sometime in the near future! You'll find all kinds of perfect crazy shit that's endless fun!

Always find walking much more edifying than waiting for a bus, but only works if you ken where the stops are, especially in Edinburgh. For more bus fun, try using Lothian Buses' online tracker, which you can get for your mobile phone.

Looking forweard to Saturday & hopefully will not luck on Thursday. AGAIN.

You are a wonder Amanda & have got me through some tough days of late, as well as partially inpsiring me to start writing again. If you didn't exist, I'd have to start dreaming.

May the best you know be the worst you know.

Love, hugs & kisses, Keni, Edinburgh

Yes, Amanda. I spend too much time waiting for buses that rip me off. Sadly, I have no other choice. I tell myself I'm doing good for the environment and crap like that.

The cardboard scultures look AMAZING! I wish I could have a look around there and take some pictures. Russia does look pretty awesome.

Glad you're enjoying the fringe! The flat i'm staying in for the festival is like a sofa-sleeping camp of fringe refugees, but it still feels real. saw you at the circus vs. sideshow thing the other morning... is it just me or is Mikelangelo getting more and more like a hotass, musical Val Kilmer? loving his high-waisted shorts.

p.s. the Forest cafe in edinburgh (near the pleasance dome) has weekly all-day cardboard box seige-weapon building/battle sessions, i believe.

Ah, Edinburgh. Yes, did that many times in the few times I've visited the city. I don't think there's enough detail in that photo to pick out which stop it is, but I'm sure I waited there at some point. I absolutely love a city with so much stone.

Have you gone up to Arthur's Seat? If you get a day with reasonable weather, it's totally worth the hike. Very very cool.
  • feliponsh · 4 months ago

i think that is a big part of why i love you. you fucking rock, amanda fucking palmer. keep being Real.

you look like you're having a mahhvelous time! am somewhat jealous while succumbing to boston's 90 plus-plus wither. Your blog is straight-frm-the-heart, which i knew it wud b. we finally release those pictures addambomb took of you at the Orpheum- on the first- (and then next month, M. Cho or Jacques Pepin or...)- and when you have a mo- switch the lights down and listen to this (from the recent WBZ show). Spoken word piece is toward the end. Sadly, Charles' piano is a bit quiet- but still bootiful. Feel free to take down after you've listened (cuddle up to Mr. G -- wit da lights orf yo!). Travel safe grrrl ;)

I am looking forward to reading your blog on the fringe. I am coming to see you on Saturday night this week; a teacher who works at the school that I just left is playing the saxophone ( I think its the sax) for you in Edinburgh...i cannot pronounce his last name so i won't try to spell it.. Really looking forward to the show; hope Edinburgh is treating you well. I recommend ' Lily through the Dark' at the Bedlam theatre.
    Take care.

I think anyone who's ever lived any kind of life on the road ought to adopt "Dilate" as a personal mantra; that song makes me wish I had more skin so I'd have more room to tattoo it down.

"I don't know what town I am in
Or what sky I am under
I wake up in the darkness
I don't have the will anymore to wonder"
  • Xenjn · 4 months ago
I'm not sure if I envy you for having so much shit to do, or pity you. Haha~ I think it's a bit of both. Quite frankly I'm a bit of a bum. I have SOME shit to do, yes, but I never get off (or on, in some cases) my ass and just fucking DO it. I laze arounddd. I envy you because things are moving fast paced for you, you have places to go, people to see, fans to hug and such. I've forgotten what it was like to be busy. College doesnt make me feel busy.

Though at the very least I pity you because you are unable to lazy around like I am? ...I don't think you'd want to, now that i think about it. ...Well...I don't even fucking know anymore.

Wonderful blog post, as usual. See, this is what I love about you. So many artists out there just put this 6 inch thick brick wall between themselves and their fans. Their blog posts are dull and emotionless...But you? You don't do that. As your fan, I don't feel that brick wall like I do with others. Instead it's like this long white picket fence, pained in psychedelic colors with random multi colored hand prints stamped all over it. Though the door may be latched shut, it's never really LOCKED.

In an interview you said: "I have a ridiculous amount of trust in my fans" But really? WE'RE the ones who have a ridiculous amount of trust in you...Or at least, I do. And more then anything one day I really want to meet you. To hug you for like, 5 minutes, and most likely start crying like a 4 year old. BUT UNTIL THEN, I will remain your loyal fan(going on like, 4 years now!) I only hope that you wont be freaked out. LOL

Have fun, stay amazing. And dude? It's okay. You'll have time to see Russia when you retire or something...So when you're like, 95.

    Luv,
    ~Xenjn

    Oh, and...

While I'd be hesitant to describe anyone as "FUCKING HAWT" these days, Jason Webley does have some of the most beautiful eyes ever.

I would so love to be a fly on the wall when you meet Steve Severin he is (one of) the main reasons I took up bass! and have been grateful I made that choice ever since it has given me so much pleasure over the years. (Almost) as much as The Banshees music and of course yours, the very thought of two of my Top five beloved musicians (I won't commit to the order of that top 5) in the same room just makes my spine tingle!! I'll be at the London the London show on the 11th with a dear friend I haven't seen for three years and have missed her so very much!
Thank you for the opportunity for what I hope will be a very special evening

OMFG thank you for linking to Kambriel!!! *bows down to you*
Of all things I saw their ad (or maybe it was an article about them?) in a Gothic Beauty magazine that I picked up on a whim one day and glanced through, I meant to remember Kambriel and there was another... I've already found that one, but I had been trying to remember them at two AM after I had showered and the names in pen on my hand had blurred and I thought my hand said kumbriel... after the original search not finding anything I gave up (was on vacation and being lazy with shitty internet access... emphasis on lazy).
But yeah. Thank you so much. You're wicked.

Cardboardia looks epic. I want to try. May end up organizing friends to do so.

The picnic looked like a blast also! Wondering if you made smores or just roasted the marshmallows? Because one isn't truly introduced to the wonders of marshmallows and campfires until you've had a fabulous smore (this involves heating the chocolate on your graham cracker on a flat rock next to the fire while you tan your marshmallows to solid goo). I made a lot of smores last week ;)

Ahhhh, wonderful second guessing and worrying... I think we all go through that at some point, but not on the scale that you must. As a student who looooves procrastinating I know a bit about this sort of thing and I advise you to not worry, but to make the most of the time that you're taking off from practicing, being social, whatever. If you're going to take the time away, enjoy it and then use that enjoyment as a reason for being productive. You probably already know this, but it's always nice for others to back you up, yes?

Yay real homes, **adoptive families** and Neil :)
And zomg Siouxie Sioux. Some serious love for her and her banshees, that should be an interesting time!

Love the bus stop photo... random and somehow artistic and perfect. How do you do it?

Alright, dinner time so I'm sending love to you, your friends and your fans from WI.
    Warmest wishes
    Greta

re: men and horses and balls.....

while "men" indicates sex....horses...does not....the horses might have been female or even neutered....thus it is impossible to accurately deduce how many balls are involved with the information given.

Also...my new favorite AFP quote...waiting for the T-shirt...might have to make it myself if no one steps up.....

"i AM Too Much Information, motherfuckers."

Cardbordia should have a book with great Cardboardia pictures and patterns and suggestions! The possibilities! The fun! Crud, now I'm going to have to find a place to keep those old cardboard boxes, aren't I?

your blogs always make me giddy, because you are out there living life in a way that i would like to someday.

i esp. feel you on the time-wasting that is trying to prioritize time spent. my life isn't as cram-packed as yours, but my advice: just go with it. obviously, it will take you beautiful places.

    much love from the midwest.

you seem happy in the russia photos :)
i get a funny feeling when the plane i'm on lands on another country... like i've missed out on the actual travel part 'cause, well, i was inside the plane the whole time and couldn't see the places i was overflying. don't you ever get that? i mean, when i travel by bus i can just look out the window and see the road and everything that's in it, and the towns i pass by, people, trees, hills and rivers and stuff. i know exactly where i am and where everything else is. by plane however, it's a different story.
can you imagine AFP taking a boat across the atlantic and then riding - neither a car, nor a motorcycle- a horse all the rest of the way to Russia? completely different experience... + photos of AFP with horses.
okay, forget it. not very practical. might as well have airplane food (which doesn't taste all that bad if you don't have to eat it very often i believe.)

random foolishness being said, i soo wish you would come and play here in Brazil. tons of AFP fans, good food, warm weather (in the summer at least)... think about it (:

    Dilate... Man...
Its so funny that you brought song up.
I've re-discovered that album for the dozenth time this week, and I always manage to get something new out of it - depending on where I am in my life.
Right now I'm stuck on the line
"When I say you sucked my brain out, the english translation is: I am in love with you, and it is no fun. But I don't use words like love, cuz words like that don't matter."
Between Ani Fucking DiFranco and Amanda Fucking Palmer, I feel like you two have pretty well covered the emotional complexities of my life - in two very separate ways...
It rocks my socks that you can cite her lyrics as relevant in your own life...

Waiting for buses is less of a popular past time when you have to take them everyday, then it becomes a frustrating fact of life :D. I still like bus rides themselves though, you see a lot of strange and interesting things looking out of bus windows in England.
  • KaneEpston · 4 months ago
I was hoping that you wrote a few sentences about me, the strange guy from middle Russia, Ufa, who had flown almost 1000 miles to see you.=)))
But it's ok. It's not my purpose to become famous by your blog =D
My main purpose was to see you and talk to you.
I had a huge black stripe in my life. It was totally shit. But after meeting you, everything started to normalize.
I thank you very much. You are my talisman now.

    dear amanda fucking palmer,

i don't know anything about security's speech, but if it was true, it's bullshit. no one was holding us, no one was closing our eyes. and i understand your sarcasm.

Only now I have understood what exactly bummed you out. and i'm very sorry. i am not going to justify what we did, i just want to apologize for everyone. and i personally promise you that I will never make such a mistake again.

once again thank you for wonderful shows, i was at the glavclub, at the afisha picnic and at the ikra. I will never forget it.

    please forgive us.
    love you.

Hi Amanda :) I just wanted to say that my older brother let me hear Girl Anachronism when I was 14 and I just fell in love. Ever since then, every single friend of mine who I recommended to listen to your music, has became an admirer. So now there's a whole bunch of people in Israel who want you to come... Is there a chance, or will it remain a mere fantasy?
  • alexmoore · 4 months ago
    hoy hoy,

man, that carbordia project sounds amazing. many thanks for flagging it! on the topic of amazing, i went to the fringe for the first time ever this year and it completely blew my mind. glad to hear it's keeping you busy.

if you have any time on your hands, i'd recommend you try and catch the trial (an amazingly ambitious, atmospheric, immersive production performed in an old burnt out squat. the company also put on these neat little themed shows/interactive events in the wee small hours of the morning which are defiantly worth catching) and lilly though the dark (the second this was over my friend and i were like 'holy shit. that was totally the creative love child of tim burton and neil gaiman. it's an incredibly inventive/ imaginative piece featuring some top notch puppetry and musical narrative. it's worth seeing for the set/ set pieces alone but it's also pretty moving).

    hope it all goes well.

Amanda, if you're answering coat questions, what about the BOOTS? You have the most amazing and apparently comfy boots. Where might something like that be procured?
  • Greta · 4 months ago
I, too, would like to know this! The boots that you wear in the Guitar Hero music video look uuberly comfy and I need a new pair of boots... rainbow, four inch stilettos are unfortunately not overly prudent for all 24/7 use :p

Another wonderful blog post! It sounds like you're having such fun traveling!

However, I took issue with something you said. You called yourself a "fish-eating vegetarian." Both the phrase and the idea are paradoxical. Vegetarians abstain from eating animal flesh, and once someone breaches that simple rule and yet still identifies as a vegetarian, it's confusing. I don't mind that you eat fish (though I'd prefer everyone be vegan); I am just bothered that you still call yourself vegetarian. It makes it harder for the rest of us who do not consume animals, but are frequently asked if we eat fish. Sometimes it's taken further by people saying such trite things as "Fish aren't really meat" "Fish are stupid" "Fish are the ONLY source of Omegas" or "My cousin's co-worker's boyfriend's roommate is vegan, but he eats fish and pepperoni pizza." I'm not blaming you for the ills of omnivorous society, nor do I think you're a bad person (I believe the contrary!). If you avoid all animal flesh except fish, please, call yourself a pescetarian.
